Publication Funding

Overview

Publishing research can be expensive. Often journals have a fee for the submission of a manuscript and most journals assess “page charges” once a manuscript is accepted for publication.

The senior author of the paper (often the student’s mentor on the project and often the principal investigator of the group or lab) is generally responsible for publication fees. If, for some reason, the mentor/senior author is unable to cover the fees, they have several options:

  1. Contact the Harvard Hope Fund for funding (Funds are limited and generally run out by November)
  2. Contact their department for support
  3. Contact the Office of Scholarly Engagement (OSE) and submit a request for funding. The request should come from the mentor/senior author, not from the student. OSE will consider providing partial funding up to $750 to defray publication fees.

Eligibility

The OSE will consider providing partial funding up to $750 to defray publication fees for MD students when:

  • The HMS MD student is first author of a publication about their scholarly project
  • The published work describes the student’s scholarly project requirement (including Master’s degree scholarly projects)
  • The publication describes scholarly project work conducted while the student was enrolled at HMS
  • The mentor/senior author contributes some funding towards the publication fees

The OSE will prioritize funding applications for manuscripts describing projects in under-funded research fields (e.g. in the humanities, health services or policy, community or global health, social sciences, etc.).

Apply

Applications are considered on a rolling basis. The mentor must submit to ose@hms.harvard.edu:

  • The mentor’s name and contact info
  • The student’s name
  • Journal name and draft of the manuscript being submitted for publication
  • Documentation from the journal of the publication fee for submission and/or publication
  • Explanation of the need for funding

If Approved

If the application is approved, the OSE will reimburse the mentor through the following process: The mentor completes a Harvard reimbursement form and supplies proof of payment of the manuscript fee (showing who paid, date, paid to whom and payment amount) to ose@hms.harvard.edu.

Once the manuscript is published, the student should email the publication and a link to the journal article to ose@hms.harvard.edu.
