Assessment using multiple choice questions is commonly used in medical education. MCQ tests are easy to administer, easy to grade, efficient and objective. However, writing effective MCQs is challenging and ineffectively written questions do not test higher level learning. During this workshop, participants will learn the principles of effective MCQ development and how to interpret data on question performance. Participants will compare MCQ to assessment with short answer questions and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these assessment tools.
