Christopher D. E. Willoughby, PhD, is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History of Medicine at Pitzer College in Claremont, California. In 2016, he completed his PhD in history at Tulane University. He is the author of Masters of Health: Racial Science and Slavery in U.S. Medical Schools (University of North Carolina Press, 2022), and with Sean Morey Smith, he edited the book Medicine and Healing in the Age of Slavery (Louisiana State University Press, 2021). He has published widely in popular and academic publications including The Washington Post and The Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences. Previously, he has held long-term fellowships at the Huntington Library, Harvard's Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History, The Pennsylvania State University, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and Emory University.
