Dennis J. Spencer, MD, PhD, is an Attending Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and an Instructor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Dr. Spencer completed the HMS Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at Boston Children’s Hospital after his residency at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital / Stanford University. He graduated from the Weill Cornell / Rockefeller / Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program, obtaining a PhD in Microbial Pathogenesis and Immunology. He is also a proud alumnus of Morehouse College. A physician-scientist, he is an investigator in the Rakoff-Nahoum laboratory (HMS/BCH) with a focus on the impact of diet on shaping the composition and function of the gut microbiome. Dr. Spencer is faculty chair of the BCH Graduate Medical Education Committee’s Joint Diversity, Health Equity & Social Justice subcommittee and Co-Chair of the BCH GI EDI taskforce. He was recently awarded the 2021 Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award from HMS. He is a Life Member of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) formerly serving as National Treasurer as well as Chairperson of its Strategic Planning Council. Dr. Spencer was also co-PI of a 4-yr NIH R13 grant providing SNMA funds supporting their Physician Researcher Initiative between 2011-2015.
