MD-PhD

The Harvard/MIT MD-PhD Program at Harvard Medical School (HMS), sponsored primarily by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through its Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) since 1974, provides fellowship support for selected and highly qualified students who have elected to pursue both the MD and PhD degrees. The overall mission is to train the next generation of premier and diverse physician-scientist leaders, who represent a rich spectrum of clinical disciplines and research areas from basic and translational sciences to bioengineering to the social sciences.

Affiliate Program - Students who enter HMS as MD students and decide after admission to pursue both the MD and a PhD degree are eligible to apply for affiliate status in the MD-PhD Program.


Harvard Medical School Master’s Programs
 

MD-SM

Harvard Medical School (HMS) offers Harvard medical students the opportunity to complete a Master of Science (SM) degree between the third and fourth years of medical school, following completion of the Principal Clinical Experience (PCE) phase of the MD curriculum. Students who enroll in the MD-SM dual degree between the third and fourth years of medical school complete a 36-credit Master of Science course of study, which includes a four-credit capstone requirement in addition to the requirements for the MD degree. MD-MMSc

Harvard Medical School (HMS) offers Harvard medical students the opportunity to complete a Master of Medical Science (MMSc) degree between the third and fourth years of medical school, following completion of the Principal Clinical Experience (PCE) phase of the MD curriculum. Students who enroll in the MD-MMSc program between the third and fourth years of medical school complete a 56-credit Master of Medical Sciences course of study, as well as the 32-credit mentored research requirement, in addition to the requirements for the MD degree. The dual MD-MMSc degree is currently offered in the following programs: Clinical Investigation; Global Health Delivery; Immunology; and Medical Education. More information about MD-MMSc.

MD-MBA

Recognizing the critical need in today's world for leaders who are educated in the intellectual disciplines and practices of medicine and management, Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Harvard Business School (HBS) established a joint MD-MBA program in 2004 to develop outstanding physician leaders, skilled in both medicine and management, to take positions of influence through which they will contribute substantially to the health and well-being of individuals and society. The Harvard MD-MBA Program, structured to be completed in five academic years, educates prospective leaders of organizations that deliver and finance health services as well as those who develop and market pharmaceuticals, medical devices and other health-related products. MD-MPH

The Harvard Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) offers Harvard medical students the opportunity to complete a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree between the third and fourth years of the MD program. Students currently enrolled in the MD program who have a career interest in public health and/or preventive medicine are eligible to apply for admission to the MPH program. MD-MPH students receive the MPH degree upon successful completion of both programs and conferral of the doctoral degree. More information about MD-MPH.
 

MD-MPP

Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government offers a combined degree program in Public Policy with Harvard Medical School. The combined program is particularly appropriate for those who wish to contribute to the field of medicine by helping to set policy or administer programs involving health care issues of public concern. Graduates of the combined program earn a Master’s in Public Policy (MPP) degree and are prepared to assume positions of leadership in federal, state and local governments, international organizations, nonprofit institutions, large service delivery organizations or research centers.
