Stepping Into the Profession: Classes of 2024 and 2025 don white coats—in person

August 4, 2021

More than 100 journeys on the path to becoming physicians or dentists began for members of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine Class of 2025 this month. The new students introduced themselves to classmates and donned their white coats for the first time. Members of the Class of 2024, well into their second year, will receive the welcome they missed last year due to the pandemic.

Fabric 2021: Njikota

Fabric is an annual event put on by the first-year HMS/HSDM class during Revisit Weekend for incoming students. It originally began as a cultural showcase to celebrate the African diaspora and highlight the experiences of black students. Over time it has evolved into a school-wide-event in which everyone is invited to share a piece of themselves and come together to embrace the diversity of our community.

Pandemic Project: Student Constance Wu on what inspired a COVID-19 children’s book

More than 160 graduating Harvard Medical School students will match to their residency programs this spring and move on to the next phase of their medical careers after graduation. Constance Wu, an MD student in the joint Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program, is one of them. She found time in the midst of the past year and her demanding studies to, among other things, illustrate a children’s book on COVID-19 written by classmate Katherine Redfield. Wu talked with HM News about what the past year has been like and what she’s hoping for the future.

From Portraits to Role Models - Why We Need Black Physicians in Academic Medicine

Early in my medical school career, before I became accustomed to the marble buildings and grandiose paintings of physicians on the walls, I attended the unveiling of a new portrait. Depicting William Hinton, a Black physician known for groundbreaking work in syphilis treatment, the addition garnered attention from faculty and students alike. We stood in the large room, surrounded by portraits of mostly White physicians, as Hinton’s image was revealed.

I exist in parallel universes. In one, I am a medical student and campus leader. In the other, I am a member of a systemically oppressive society and steward of my ancestors’ sacrifices. In both, I exist as a Black woman — and sometimes that identity makes these two universes clash.

Winds of Change

Harvard Medical School Dean George Q. Daley has approved a recommendation from a Faculty Council Subcommittee on Artwork and Cultural Representations task force to rename the Oliver Wendell Holmes academic society in honor of the late William Augustus Hinton, MD 1912, an HMS clinical professor of bacteriology and immunology.
